Éva Lauter, director of the Balassi Institute, outlined the programme for the Erkel-Mahler anniversary year at a press conference at the Hungarian Academy of Science's Music Institute on Tuesday.

The Balassi Institute has called a tender for programmes that demonstrate Erkel and Hungarian romanticism, Lauter said. The deadline for applying is April 30, she added.
The Hungarian Academy of Science's Music Institute will open an exhibition on the place of Hungarian history in opera and vice versa on October 1. An exhibition entitled Ferenc Erkel, Director of the Music Academy, will open in the Liszt Memorial Museum and Research Centre on June 5.
Hungary's national postal company Magyar Posta will issue a block of stamps for the Erkel anniversary.
Gyula, the town in southeast Hungary where Erkel was born, is making "full-hearted" preparations for the anniversary year, said deputy-mayor Gyula Erdmann. The Gyula Castle Theatre will host a production of Hunyadi László, one of Erkel's best known operas, together with the Csokonai Theatre in Debrecen, he added.
An 800-page critical edition of Erkel's Bánk Bán, which many would consider as Hungary's "national opera", has been published for the anniversary.
