(MTI) - This year most of the awards were given for outstanding interpretations of Beethoven's music.

Ivan Fischer won the award for the performances of Beethoven symphonies with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment which the jury described as "seared onto the memories of all those present". Fischer's "inspired originality, penetrating intelligence and intensely questing spirit have left an indelible mark on the ensemble, and the wider musical community," the jury said.

The Takacs Quartet was honoured for its highly acclaimed complete cycle of Beethoven String Quartets at London's South Bank Centre. The jury said the quartet "brought a unique insight, maturity and uncompromising excellence to these performances, making this one of the great musical events of recent years."

The awards were presented at a gala in Hotel Dorchester near Hyde Park on Tuesday evening.
