Most of the books from the Sárospatak library were returned to Hungary in February, shortly before an official state visit to Budapest by Russian president Vladimir Putin. But some of the books remained behind. Negotiations on these volumes continued after Putin?s visit and an agreement on their return was signed just a few days ago.
Gyurcsány stressed that the cultural treasures of the Sárospatak library, which belong to Hungary?s past, its national history, the Reformed Church and the Hungarian nation, could only be returned because of a new approach of politics, an approach which involves not just talking about Hungarians? home, but demonstrating an ability to cooperate as well.
