György Igricz, who heads Filharmónia Budapest, promises this year's programme will include much music from the Renaissance on the occasion of Hungary's Renaissance Year. Among the foreign guests coming to Sopron is the English ensemble Collegium Musicum 90. On June 25, the Authentic Quartet from the Hungarian city of Szombathely will perform works by Haydn and Beethoven.
On June 26, René Clemencic, a French master of Renaissance music will give an organ concert. Johann Sonnleitner will play Bach's Goldberg Variations on June 28, and on the same day France's Stradivaria Ensemble will also perform. The programme will close on June 30 with the traditional dance evening.
Among the highlights at this year's Early Music Days will be a performance, on June 27, of Orfeo ed Euridice with a libretto by Raniero de' Calzabigi and a score not by Gluck, but by an unknown composer whose work was found in the collection of the Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
Though the music may not be as ingenious as Gluck's, the performance could mark a moment in music history as it has likely never seen on stage before, conductor of the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra György Vashegyi said.
