Sopron to Erect Statue Honouring Writer

English

 András Sütő

The statue will be erected by the Calvin Circle and the Transylvania Circle.

Calvin Circle head László Szarka said Sütő celebrated his 75th birthday in Sopron in 2002, after which he maintained a close relationship with the city.

The sculptor Vince Bocskay has been commissioned to make the bronze bust, which will be placed opposite the Reformed Church on the city's Deák Square. The square is the home to memorials of another two well known Hungarian writers: Ferenc Kölcsey and Géza Gyóni.

The bust will cost HUF 3 million to erect, an amount to be covered by donations, Szarka said.

Sopron City Council spokesman Balázs Kuslics said that civil organisations in Sopron have initiated the erection of several statues in the city over the years. The local council appreciates these efforts and assists in their implementation as much as possible, he added.
