Széchenyi Baths Offer Wet Wonders

English

The baths have many pools, both indoors and outdoors. In the centre of the complex is a swimming pool flanked by two large shallow pools. The water swirls around and around in one, making it favourite for the children. The other is warmer and calmer, and on the wide edges of the stairs leading into the pool, one can always find chess players, as seen in almost every guidebook to Hungary.

There are many more pools of varying temperature in the baths' main wing. Some, such as those in the centre and the east wing have been renovated recently. Others are under renovation.

The baths' two big dry saunas are to be found at the edge of each wing, down flights of stairs. Though one of the saunas is under renovation, the other is big enough to fit in everyone comfortably. Sauna-goers can take advantage of a machine that makes soothing bunches of ice crystals and a basin with ice-cold water to dip into after a long steam.

The baths also have perhaps the only women's sundeck with a view of elephants - not to be found among the baths' male guests, but across the street, in the city zoo.
