The show, called Textile+, is part of the 4th Textile Triennial and features work from the collection of the Lodz Textile Museum in Poland.
Mária Tenki, who is in charge of culture for the Szombathely local government, said the city hosted its first exhibition of textile artists 40 years earlier. Lodz is the only other city in Europe that can boast a recurring international showcase of textile art, she added.
Gallery of Szombathely director Mónika Zsámbéky, said the exhibition title, Textile +, reflects the expanding area of textile art which has crossed over into many other fields, such as painting, sculpture and photography.
Awards were granted at the opening of the triennial by the Ministry of Human Resources, the Hungarian Art Academy, the Hungarian Design Council, the Association of Hungarian Artists and Industrial Artists, the Cultural Foundation for Textile Art and the Rózsa Anna Foundation.
The triennial runs until September 29.
