Andreas Scholl was named singer of the year for his Arias for Senesino, and pianist Leif Ove Andsnes won the instrumentalist of the year award for his recording of Rachmaninoff piano concertos, beating out violinist Maxim Vengerov and pianist Angela Hewitt. Plácido Domingo was presented with a lifetime achievement award.
Dario Marianelli's soundtrack to Pride & Prejudice, performed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet and the English Chamber Orchestra, won the award for best soundtrack/musical theater.
The Classical Brits, a charity event, was founded in 2000 and has become a fixture on the calendars of British classical music lovers. The event is organised by record-industry trade association BPI and all revenues are donated to arts projects.
Performances at the awards ceremony at London?s Royal Albert Hall included ones by Rolando Villazón and Kiri Te Kanawa.
