The tower, which was covered with wooden scaffolding, caught fire on Wednesday evening, according to local press reports. The fire brigade could do little to save the tower as their ladders cold not reach such a height. The damage is estimated at EUR 1 million.
The interior of the church remained undamaged.
The church was built in the Gothic style in 1563, but Baroque elements were added later. The church has a congregation with several hundred members.
