The goals of the festival, which is the brainchild of the Csokonai Theatre's former director János Csányi, are to support plays as a form of literature, to raise the profile of the theatre and to evaluate plays.

The playwrights Károly Szakonyi and László Garaczi, and the dramaturge Rozália B. Brestyánszky picked out the pieces for this year's programme.

The choice of pieces was intended to be representative of the season as well as give "the audience in Debrecen watchable performances", said Szakonyi. At such times, a person strives to overcome the "infection" of his own taste and move in the direction of objectivity, he added.

The varied styles of the performances on the festival programme as well as the pieces from regions with Hungarian minorities outside of the country give the festival a special feel, Szakonyi said. The most important goal is for the audience to enjoy it, he added.

Csokonai Theatre director Attila Vidnyánszky said the 2010 DESZKA would use the "broadest methods to bring it closer to the public" by bringing traditional as well as alternative directions to the stage.

The festival's professional programme, which has been made with the cooperation of István Tasnádi and Ákos Németh will be in the same class as the performance programme, said Vidnyánszky.

Among the highlights of this year's programme is a production called 20/20 by the Yorick Studio of Targu Mures, Romania, directed by the Gianina Carbunariu. In the piece, actors from Targu Mures, which has a large Hungary minority, and Bucharest tell the story of the play in their own languages. Another big draw at the festival should be Róbert Alföldi's production of a play by András Vinnai.
