Hungarian directors Szabolcs Hajdu, György Pálfi and Ágnes Kocsis will each show a film at the festival, held in the spa town of Karlovy Vary.
Hajdu?s ?White Palm? will compete in the festival?s ?East of the West? selection, a grouping of outstanding films from the region started last year. The film, based on the experiences of the director?s gymnast brother, will compete with 16 others in the category.
Pálfi?s second feature film, ?Taxidermia?, an adaptation of the short stories of Lajos Parti Nagy, will compete in the festival?s ?Another View? selection, which includes unconventional and even experimental films. ?Taxidermia? recently received a standing ovation at its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. French daily Le Monde called it ?the zaniest without a doubt? of the films competing in the Un Certain Regard selection.
Kocsis? film ?Fresh Air? will compete in the ?Variety Critics? Choice? selection. The category was established by the European Film Promotion organisation and trade journal Variety to provide an international introduction for 10 young European directors. Variety critic Eddie Cockrell first saw Kocsis? film at the Hungarian Film Festival and praised the young Hungarian director?s work.
The Karlovy Vary festival will open with a screening of ?Time?, the latest film by Korean director Kim Ki-duk.
