Stańko will play one of his latest compositions at the concert, a piece written for the opening ceremony of the Museum of the Warsaw Uprising.
Stańko has become a cult figure in the region, a kind of Miles Davis for Eastern European jazz. He found fame during the second wave of Polish jazz in the seventies, founding a quartet together with the violinist Zbigniew Seifert. Stańko has played with some of jazz?s biggest names, including Krysztof Penderecki, Don Cherry, Chico Freeman, Cecil Taylor, Dino Saluzzi, John Surman and Nils Landgren.
In the nineties he was signed by the record label ECM, whose catalogue includes works by important jazz musicians such as Jan Garbarek, Pat Metheny and Keith Jarrett. Stańko?s mystic, ballad-like performances and electronic experiments made him one of the label?s biggest sellers.
Stańko?s performance will be followed with a concert by the Kornél Kovács Fekete Quartet. The trumpeter Kornél Kovács Fekete is one of Hungary?s most original jazz composers. He is the founder of the 19-member Modern Art Orchestra, as well as a member of Emil.RuleZ!, the Budapest Jazz Orchestra, the László Dés Septet and Eszter Horgas?s Class Jazz Band. He has performed as a soloist at countless concerts and is featured as a studio musician on more than one hundred albums.
