Trafó Celebrates Tenth Birthday

English

In spite of its relatively small venue - in a former transformer building, hence the name "Trafó" or transformer in Hungarian - the Trafó has managed well with just one stage, a few rehearsal rooms, a small exhibition space and a café. The venue's management has demonstrated an unwavering interest in the contemporary arts and created an opportunity to make Budapest audiences familiar with all of its forms. The Trafó's programme has focused on contemporary dance, performance and theatre, but it has not shied away from other contemporary art forms, showing the latest trends in music and the fine arts as well.

The Trafó's staff regularly travel to contemporary festivals around the world and select the latest and most interesting - often experimental - performances, then they invite them to Budapest.

Over the years, the Trafó has developed a demanding but appreciative audience whose understanding, enjoyment and assessment of the contemporary arts is due in part to the Trafó.

The Trafó offers encouragement to daring and inspired performers who set out to bring new and fresh pieces to audiences and, consequently, makes the public more open to unexpected, unusual and thought-provoking art.
