Trey McIntyre Project Impresses in Budapest

English

The Trey McIntyre Project, established five years ago, first started performing at summer festivals in the United States, but their programme became a full-year affair as their popularity grew.

The three-part programme in Budapest started with Leatherwing Bat, an atmospheric piece inspired by McIntyre's childhood in Kansas. The music for the piece was old concert recordings by the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, and it featured a magic dragon, paper airplanes and patched costumes. McIntyre's dancers were very good, sometimes excellent, and all were of a different shape and of strong character, capable of humour, mimicry and emotion.

The second piece, called (serious), was inspired by the film director and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman. The trio of Chanel DeSilva, Jason Hartley and Brett Perry maintained a varied and original performance for a while, but the piece lost its momentum after some time.

The last piece, A Day In The Life, was a light-hearted piece, complete with gags, performed to the music of The Beatles. Though lacking any complex emotional undertones, it demonstrated how well McIntyre can use music and operate his dance machinery.
