Kommersant critic Andrei Plahov complained that it took a year for the film to make it to cinemas in the Russian capital, but warned against overreacting to the work.

?We should not compare Béla Tarr to Henri Cartier Bresson, Tarkovsky and Lars von Trier?.We should make less art, or prophets, of artists so that they can reach out to people more easily,? he said.

Oleg Zincov explained why he didn?t like The Turin Horse in Vedomosti.

?The reason it?s difficult to watch the film is not because it?s slow, but because it keeps suggesting that this is not simply his last film but also his best. He does not allow the viewer to doubt this. The Turin Horse must be either loved unconditionally and declared a masterpiece or categorically rejected on the premise that Tarr is a poser,? the critic said.

Stas Tirkin suggested in the film could get better as it ages, writing in Komsomolskaya Pravda.

?Some films are unbearable but will not let you forget them, they start living a life of their own and as time passes, they seem to become better and better. The two and a half hour long, black and white ?terrible? Tarr film, The Turin Horse, is such a film,? the critic said.

Stanislav Nikulin praised Tarr?s film and his oevre on the website kinomania.ru.

?Even if we don?t want to, we have to accept that we what we are watching here is the last film by one of the world?s most outstanding filmmakers,? he said.

The Turin Horse, won the Jury Grand Prix Silver Bear and the Competition FIPRESCI Prize at last year?s Berlin Film Festival. It was Hungary?s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at this year?s Oscars.
