The six-year project was completed with central budget funding available under the National Heritage Programme, Túrony mayor Lajos Szarkándi said. He added that the renovated structure could be used for cultural events as well as worship in the future.
Szarkándi said he hoped the church would draw tourists, noting that many more are expected to visit the region when the nearby city of Pécs takes over the European Capital of Culture title in 2010.
The church?s nave was constructed in the 13th century, and its Gothic altar was built in the 14th century. The last major addition to the church ? a Baroque tower ? was erected in 1827.
