Vasarely Exhibition Draws Big Crowds

English

Vasarely's geometric abstract art shows the conflict between science and art, rationality and emotion, reality and fantasy, and content and appearance - conflict that is all the more relevant considering the degree to which technology has become a part of daily life. Vasarely, who was born in 1908 and died in 1997, was certainly ahead of his time.

In addition to Vasarely's much reproduced op-art works, such as his zebra stripes, the exhibition shows lesser known earlier works. An early self-portrait shows cubism's influence on Vasarely. A later self-portrait, from 1977, is made up of yellow and brown squares, showing the full effect of op-art.

Most of the works in the exhibition are on loan from the Janos Pannonius Museum of Pécs.
