The museum was renovated as part of an ambitious 1.7-billion-forint (EUR 6.1m) reconstruction project covering the whole museum quarter of the city.
Victor Vasarely (1906-1997), a famous son of the city, was a Hungarian-born French painter. He developed a unique style of geometric abstract art. His "Zebra", composed of curving black and white stripes, is considered the first Op-art piece in the world.
The museum named after him keeps about 400 Vasarely works, including paintings, graphics, carpets and statuettes.
Since its opening in 1976, it has attracted over 2 million visitors.
