On the programme will be 430 events, including theatre and puppet performances, concerts, film screenings and exhibitions. The events will take place in and around Nyíregyháza, in northeast Hungary.
The festival's organisers boast it is Europe's largest free world music concert series. Indeed, this year's programme lists performances by Rabasa (Cape Verde), Toumani Diabeté's Symmetric Orchestra (Mali), Patriarcas de la Rumba (Spain), Juan Carlos Caceres (Argentina), Kroke (Poland), René Aubry (France) and Johnny Clegg (South Africa). Hungarian performers include the Kerekes Band, Makám, the Budapest Klezmer Band, Romano Drom featuring Romanestham, Szájról szájra, Pál István Szalonna and Tecsői Banda.
Happy Art Festival is expected to draw 150,000 visitors, one-fifth of whom will be foreigners.
