The orchestra, which has been called "the inventor of post-modern jazz", plays minimalist blues, jazzed-up Strauss, theatre noise and many, many other forms of music in an effort to expand the boundaries of traditional jazz.
Set up nearly three decades ago by the Swiss piano man mathias rüegg (who insists his name be written with all lower-case letters) and saxophonist Wolfgang Pusching, the VAO brings a new programme on tour each year. In their latest programme, they pay tribute to such European visionaries as da Vinci, Kant, Saint Frances of Assisi, Copernicus, Newton and Freud, drawing from Europe's classical music tradition. They also revisit the work of American film divas in a jazzier vein.
