The park, on an area of 7.5 hectares, opened after almost four years of preparations. It cost almost HUF 2 billion to build, but European Union funding covered half of the cost.
The park will offer visitors demonstrations of period trades as well as historical reenactments. It is divided into five areas: a medieval village, an old town, a castle, a stage and a jousting area.
The park is part of a series of investments in the tourism industry of Baranya County which include a bicycle path through the forest between the city of Pécs and Orfű, a tourism centre on Lake Orfű and a facelift for the winegrowing village of Mecseknádasd.
József Graf, Hungary's minister in charge of rural development, said at the opening of the park that, according to the European model, tourists seek the peace of the countryside rather than the bustle of the city.
