West-Balkán's building in Futó Street is soon to be demolished, but the pub will reopen just a short walk away, in Nagytemplom Street, in the first part of 2008.
The pub's owners expected the news, considering the building is in the middle of an area of the city's District VIII that is undergoing a major rehabilitation. The project's developers allowed West-Balkán to operate at the site as long as possible.
West-Balkán has put together a special farewell programme for December. The Váradi Roma Café and Szilvásy Gipsy Folk Band will perform at a mini-festival promoting equal opportunity on December 27. This will be followed by the Akanak Festival between December 28 and 30, featuring internationally-renowned world music acts.
West-Balkán has become one of Budapest's hottest meeting points. Weekly party series, such as Rewind and Deck Attack regularly draw hundreds of people. It has also hosted many unforgettable concerts, such as ones by the Canadian punk band Nomeansno and the South American folk music brigade Che Sudaka. West-Balkán also hosts Vilmos Vajdai's Táp Theatre and is home to the Impex Gallery.
