West-Balkan to Reopen on March 12

English

West-Balkan, which has been a fixture on the capital's culture scene - on and off - for almost a decade, will reopen in another unconventional location on March 12. This time, the pub is taking over the third and fourth floors of the old Skala Metro department store, opposite Nyugati railway station.

West-Balkan's first home was on a peninsula jutting into the Danube in the south of the capital. But the run-down area was marked for rehabilitation and the pub had to move. The owners found another venue in Budapest's District VIII, also up for rehabilitation, but stayed until 2007. On the last day of the year, West-Balkan regulars had a "bulldozer" party before the building was razed.

The West-Balkan's new home is in one of the busiest parts of Budapest.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Gábor Arató, the architect for the project, said he didn't understand why the space in the Skala Metro, in the centre of such a frequented area, could have remained vacant for two decades.

The new West-Balkan will open its terrace in the spring, giving guests a panoramic view of Nyugati Square below.

The pub's "heart" is a central area with a capacity for 1,600 people, ideal for hosting concerts as well as theatre productions. The space will host its first theatre production - a premiere directed by András Dömötör - at the beginning of October. A piece based on a Sanskrit fairy tale and involving the jazz musician Mihály Dresch will follow.

Márton Náray, who is in charge of the music programme at West-Balkan, said the lineup "could be called 360 degrees", featuring everything from a classical string quartet to techno.

Smooth and Turrell will play at the pub's opening party.
