(MTI) - The eight-member international jury has selected Barati the winner of the contest, which comes with a cash prize of 50,000 dollars. Barati finished ahead of two finalists from Russia, two from South-Korea and one from Ukraine, said the agency's director.
Barati, born in Budapest to a family of musicians, performed Paganini's Violin Concerto No. 1 in the competition finals on Monday, Csilla Biro said. The awarding ceremony will be held on Tuesday evening, she added.
His instrument, a Lady Harmsworth Stradivari from 1703, has been given to him by the Chicago-based Stradivari Society.
Barati was first spotted by the European director of the Stradivari Society, Eduard Wulfson, in 1996.
