Bartók will air a new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, directed by Katharina Wagner, on July 25. The performance will be Wagner's - she is the great granddaughter of Richard Wagner - first independent production at the festival. (Her production of Lohengrin in Budapest three years earlier received mixed reviews.)
Franz Hawlata will sing as Hans Sachs, and Robert Dean Smith will once again take the role of Walther von Stolzing after performing it in 1999. The American singer recently sang a concert version of Richard Strauss's Ariadne to great acclaim in Budapest. Another American, Amanda Mace, will sing the role of Eva Pogner. Mace is the winner of a scholarship from the Wagner Society of New York.
Bartók Radio will also broadcast a production of Tannhäuser by Fabio Luisi, who is participating at the festival for the first time, on July 26. Judit Németh will sing as Venus in the production.
From Christian Thielemann's production of Der Ring des Nibelungen, Das Rheingold will be broadcast on air on July 27, Die Walküre on July 28, Siegfried on July 30, and Götterdämmerung on August 1. The Hungarian Ádám Fischer, a frequent contributor at the festival, will conduct Parsifal on August 2.
