English

Hungarian photography association MAFOSZ established the Hungarian Day of Photography in 2003, choosing August 29 because that was the day in 1840 when the mathematician, physicist and geographer Antal Vállas presented the daguerreotype to the Hungarian Scientific Society.

As part of this year's celebration, visitors to the Hungarian Art Institute can see the work of  Mrs. László Bodrogi, Tamás Retkes, Zoltán Makovinyi, Adrienn Gunics, László Zágon and József Wágner Csapó between August 24 and September 2.

On August 29, exhibitions of photography will open at venues all around Hungary, including the Túri Fazekas Museum in Mezőtúr, the Noszlop Arts Centre, the Pákozd Arts Centre, the Himmer House in Székesfehérvár, the Mikszáth Arts Centre in Balassagyarmat, the City Museum in Fonyód and the Private Photo Gallery in Kalaznó.

In Budapest, the Ágens Photography Gallery will open an exhibition called Astronomy 2009, the Rét Gallery will show works by Balázs Kulcsár, the Pataky Arts Centre will show photographs by Zsolt Puskel and the Museion No. 1 Gallery will present images by the Dunatáj Photography Circle.

The highlight of the programme will be an event at the Hungarian Art Institute on August 30. István Kerekes will be presented with the Photgrapher of the Year award at the event.
