Gyorgy Faludy |
The audience in Washington gave an enthusiastic response to the 80-minute performance entitled Around the World with the Rhymes of Gyorgy Faludy.
Turek is on a six-week tour of North America. In addition to Faludy, his monodramas celebrate the work of the Hungarian poets Miklos Radnoti and Attila Jozsef. Engravings by the graphic artist Kornel Nagel are used as props in Turek's performances.
Turek is performing in Toronto, Ottawa, Boston and New York, as well as Washington.
Turek said the North American tour was his idea and he found it "most appropriate" to take the Faludy performance to Toronto, where the late poet who fled communist Hungary spent 22 years.
Turek's performance base on the works of Radnoti, entitled Shade in the Shade, was introduced in Ottawa by the Canadian historian and literary expert Ferenc Andai, who was a prisoner with the Radnoti in Bor in 1944.
