 Péter Fried

Fried, a member of the Hungarian State Opera, sang with the Orchestre de Paris and chorus under the baton of Pierre Boulez.

The concert was one of the highlights of the "conductors' festival" which is taking place for the fourth time between June 7 and July 7. It was the 84-year-old Boulez's first time conducting in the gothic cathedral of Saint Denis, and tickets for the 1,800 places had been sold out weeks in advance.

Fried was joined in the performance by the German soprano Melanie Diener, the English mezzo-soprano Anna Stéphany and the New Zealand tenor Simon O'Neill.

Fried first worked with Boulez in a production of Bartók's Bluebeard's Castle three years earlier in the Théatre du Chatelet in Paris. Fried sang the bass solo in the Glagolita Mass with Boulez conducting for the first time with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London's Royal Albert Hall last August.

Fried said it was extraordinary to work with Boulez as he always chooses the best 20th century music.
