The exhibition, entitled ?History in Pictures?, aims to present a broad sample of Hungarian comics in a fitting environment, exhibition organiser Ernő Rochi said.

The exhibition shows 130 original drawings ? covering a combined 84 square metres ? by 21 comic artists. The drawings, some in colour and some black and white, were published independently or in periodicals such as Füles, Képes Újság, Népszava, Magyar Ifjúság, Pajtás, Kölyök, Tábortűz and Lobogó starting in 1957.

The artists represented at the exhibition include Ernő Zorád, considered by many to be the king of Hungarian comics, and Attila Dargay, who became famous as a maker of animated films. Also on display are works by István Endrődi, one of the creators of the cartoon character ?Ludas Matyi?, Lívia Rusz, a Transylvanian artist, and Attila Fazekas, the ?grand old man? of Hungarian comics.

Rochi noted that comics are considered low-brow in Hungary, while in Western Europe they have achieved a higher level of respect. The exhibition is intended to improve the genre?s image with Hungarians, he said.

The exhibition ?History in Pictures? only runs until the end of October, but Rochi plans to host a new exhibition of Hungarian comics each year. In 2010, when the nearby city of Pécs takes the title European Capital of Culture, he hopes to put on an exhibition of comics from around the world.
