Szántó first worked for Európa Könyvkiadó as an editor for several important collections of plays. She also wrote a volume on Henrik Ibsen for the publisher?s ?World of Authors? series. Since 1988, she has translated into Hungarian mainly English texts, but also some French and German ones.
Szántó?s translations are prepared with great care and linguistic finesse, rare in today?s excessively commercialised market, Európa Könyvkiadó said. And she is that rare translator ? the favourite of all publishers ? who takes on any kind of work, be it popular fiction, literary fiction and non-fiction.
Európa Könyvkiadó will present Szántó with the prize, which was established in 1980, at a ceremony on June 7.
Szántó is currently at work on a translation of Amos Oz?s monumental autobiography ?A Tale of Love and Darkness?, to be published in time for Christmas 2006.
