Budapest Mayor István Tarlós visited Beijing in June to sign a twin city agreement. At the time, he also visited Shanghai and agreed to develop cooperation with heads of the eastern Chinese metropolis. As a result of these talks, a delegation from Shanghai has now travelled to Budapest and deputy minister Li Xi was received in the Hungarian city of Szentes.

The agreement envisages inter-city cooperation in culture, education and tourism, including establishing closer links between art festivals organised by the two cities, such as the International Art Festival of Shanghai and the Budapest Art Festival.

Under the agreement, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the Tongji University will develop more intensive cooperation, especially in the area of environmental protection. There are several Hungarian students and teachers at Tongji University already and the agreement will pave the way for exchange students and teachers in Hungary, as well as closer cooperation in research and science.
