The contract was signed with Concefa, the Sibiu-based company which won the tender to restore the monumental group of statues made by János Fadrusz in 1902.
The restoration will be no easy task: the statue of Matthias Corvinus on his horse, surrounded by the heads of the Black Army - Balázs Magyar, Pál Kinizsi, István Báthory and János Szapolyai - have probably rusted from the inside, the paper said.
The Hungarian and Romanian governments agreed in 2006 to share the estimated EUR 800,000 cost of the restoration in equal part.
A plaster model of the statue was awarded a gold medal at the 1900 World Exposition in Paris.
