The critic Ilma Rakusa wrote that Végel ?belongs with his 71 years to the most astute observers of political transformations and catastrophes in Central Eastern Europe?.

He has since received many invitations to readings and scholarships.
 
Végel?s book of essays, recently translated into German, is called Atonement ? Writings While Travelling. But this is no collection of ?globalised? reports, the critic said.
 
?Végel travels with the baggage of his past and acculturation, with a sharp eye for European distortions and post-Yugoslavian absurdities,? she said.
 
?Végel belongs to those people without illusions who turn harsh facts into satire; his humour and severity cannot be separated,? she added, while noting that his intellectual and artistic work is at once accessible and productive.
