(MTI) - Polgar died suddenly on Sunday afternoon in Zurich, at the age of 64, Judit Varkonyi, the press spokeswoman of the Budapest State Opera, told MTI.
Polgar earner international recognition in the world's leading opera houses including the Royal Opera House in London, the La Scala in Milan, the Opera de Paris and the Vienna State Opera.
Born in Budapest in 1947 he studied at the Budapest Franz Liszt Academy of Music in 1967-72 and later privately with Russia's Yevgeny Nesterenko. He joined the Budapest State Opera in 1973 and the Zurich Opera in 1991.
One of his most important parts was the title role of Bela Bartok's "The Bluebeard's Castle" which he sang several times and also recorded with Pierre Boulez.
Polgar was also professor at the Liszt Academy of Music.
